A heavyweight in the electronic music scene, New Zealand’s most well known dub producer Mt Eden is set to drop his upcoming single, „Reptile„, as a Valentine’s treat for us today.
We had the pleasure to have an Interview with the Artist just in time for the release:
Hi Jesse! I’m really glad to have the opportunity to talk with you about your new release „Reptile“. I gotta admit, i listened to your track „Venom“ about five times today, it really pushed me at the gym.
I got a couple questions prepared for you:
Germany has a deep-rooted love for bass music, especially in cities like Berlin, Mannheim and Hamburg. Have you noticed a connection between your music and the German audience?
„We did a tour in Germany a while ago, and we played a bunch of drum and bass. It was received really well, especially in comparison to what we’re predominantly known for. The Germans really seem to like it fast. I was blown away by how it went down. We played some of my old school drum and bass, including remixes of „Fear“ by Munch and my drum and bass version of „Omen.“ I played that out, and it was amazing.“
Have you been to Berlin?
„We played a couple of shows in Berlin years ago, and then we attended the Berlin Music Video Awards, which we had won about three years ago. I loved Berlin, it was amazing.“
Your new track, „Reptile“, drops today. How would you describe the vibe of this track?
„When I was putting the track together, I was aiming for something that felt like a badass song, a follow-up to „Venom.“ The vibe was meant to be a club set type of song with a lot of impact. I just wanted it to be powerful. When I played with the sounds, I used a lot of common elements like the wreath noise, the plucks, and the stabs. The goal was to create something that people had heard before and could easily relate to. I did experiment with different sounds and vibes, but I wanted it to still connect with the fans. Writing the track was a lot of fun, and it took me about two weeks to get everything fleshed out. You know how it is with tracks—you can sometimes spend months on one, and by the end, you’re like, „Wow, I wasted all that time.“ But this track just came together seamlessly. That was the vibe.“
Can we expect to see you back in Germany for a festival or a club event?
„Ideally, we want to return to Germany. Funny enough, Germany is Mount Eden’s second highest listening country on all streaming platforms, so it’s a really important part of where we’re headed brand-wise. We’re working hard to make sure we can bring the brand back to places like Germany, especially since it’s one of our top listening spots. Hopefully, this release will reach those audiences, and we’re aiming for 2025 and 2026 to be great years to return to those places and really connect with those listeners. As Jesse mentioned, three years ago, Mount Eden won a Berlin Music Award, beating out some massive names in the music video industry. So, coming back to Germany is definitely something the brand is looking to do.“
How are you celebrating the release today?
„To celebrate the release today, we’ll do the typical Kiwi thing—grab a couple of beers and celebrate the achievements we’re making and how the brand is moving forward.“
What can fans and listeners expect from you in 2025? More driven bays, collaborations or any surprises in the works?
„Fans can expect drum and bass and dubstep. My next release is going to be dubstep, and we’ve got quite a bit of music ready to release. The next one is already lined up, so we’re really excited. It will feature a mix of dubstep and drum and bass, with some heavy tracks, but also some melodic elements. There will be some good summer jams and solid club bangers too.“
Thank you for your time Jesse! We are excited for the release and whats to come!
